Leaves: A Couple of Projects

A couple of leaf projects going on this week...the first one is a really awesome art project!  First we collected leaves from the neighborhood and used spray adhesive to glue them to a foam board.
Then we covered them with aluminum foil and rubbed the pattern of the leaves into the foil.
Next we used spray paint to cover the foil and let it dry.

Then we used steel wool to scrape the paint off and see the beautiful patterns in the leaves...

 Rowan wanted to help...

 I think they are beautiful!
 We want to make more...
Our second leaf project involved seeing the fall colors inside the leaves before they turn!  Leaf Chromatography.
 We used  3 different leaves.
Again, Rowan was "helping" with his wooden spoons.
We tore the leaves into tiny bits and placed each one in a separate jar. Then we covered the leaves with rubbing alcohol and used the wooden spoon to chop the leaves some more.
Then we put the jars in a pan of hot tap water and waited....about 30 min.
Then we placed coffee filters over the side of the jars and waited...about 2 hours.
The camera didn't capture it so well, but one was brown, one was yellow and one was orange.

Way cool!

So great to be an unschooler.
