Meet Alvin

Well, Willow insisted that getting a new Hamster would help her remember Bubbles Bambi :)
So, off to Petco we went and we came home with Alvin.

Alvin is a Dwarf Chinese Hamster. They aren't actually dwarf hamsters but are categorized as such because of their size. He is just about the same size as my cell phone :) He is soooooo sweet. Willow has carried him around for days and he just hangs out :)

Maggie LOVES him!! She will come and lay by his cage and wait for him to be taken out. She even growled at one of the cats for coming near the cage :)

Goodbye Bubbles Bambi (Hammy) We Love you!

Today was a bittersweet day around here. As usual, Willow awoke, requested what she wanted for breakfast and went immediately to get Bubbles Bambi out to play. She came running to me with her and said "Mommy she isn't moving" then immediately fell to tears. This is not the first time she has had to deal with a pet dying and she knew the signs.

A few years ago her beloved guinea pig Kipper passed on. We all had our tears and then talked about what we should do. She decided that Hammy(my nickname for her) would be happiest buried in the nature preserve near our home. So, we gathered ourselves and hiked on over. She chose a beautiful spot under a tree. It just so happened a snake was under the tree :) And of course Josh had to pick it up. We buried Hammy with some soft moss and a large maple leaf as a "blanket" :) Josh suggested we all say something about Hammy but Willow said she only wanted to stand in silence. When she was ready we hiked on home. On the way out Mara found another snake. This one was much smaller and much more calm, Willow even held it for a moment. We are happy to say that Hammy's final resting place is a beautiful preserve full of life, snakes, birds, fish, and squirrels that we have seen. We will miss you Hammy.........

Flag Plant for Memorial Day 2008

Tonight I went with Josh to his Boy Scout troop's Flag Plant at Willamette National Cemetery. It was quite an honor and a humbling experience. It was a cold and rainy evening after a bright an sunny day :) Gotta love Portland weather!

First, 2 members of each troop carried the flags for the flag ceremony. Josh has already done this before so he did not need to participate.

There was a speaker who had fought in 3 wars including the most recent and reminded us all to not forget those that are serving now and those that have passed.

Lowering of the Flag to half mast, with the bag pipes playing in the background. It was quite moving.

I think just between Josh and I we planted at least 200 flags. It was amazing to see how many flags were planted. Apparently last year they were 25,000 flags short! The way that it works is you first plant the flag, say the persons name, and then salute them. One thing that was so sad to me was that for many of the people buried there, we would be the only recognition or visit they would have. Most of the men and women that we planted flags for had fought in WW1 and WW2. I saw a couple from Korea and Josh saw a couple from Vietnam. There were many husbands and wives together and even some with jokes like "that's all she wrote!"

Homeschool Prom

Aspen and Anya decided at the last minute to attend the OHEN (Oregon Home Education Network) Homeschool prom. They had a lot of fun :) Here are the pictures that they took.......

Joshua's 15th Birthday at Cannon Beach!!

Where did the time go??? I cannot believe he is 15!!

We had a great day celebrating Joshua. We started with his requested breakfast; biscuits, eggs and bacon. Then we opened gifts and headed to the beach. Aspen's friend Anya came a long with her dog Baily. She is a beautiful Rottweiler and makes our border collies look like chihuahuas!

Josh requested that we go to the same beach as last time. (for those of you that are movie buffs, it is the same beach that the moves Goonies was filmed on :) )It was a great day, the weather was perfect. We had lunch at a small cafe that serves a pizza that Josh loves.

Mara did some beautiful sketches/paintings......and some weird faces ;)

Maggie had to swim out after a wave crashed over her :)

Josh got these swords and he and David had a duel..... but not before I got him good!! :)

Josh got a boogie board as one of his gifts. He had a blast riding the waves in....

We just had a tiny cake on the beach. I will make Josh a really cool cake for his birthday party next month. He wanted to wait until his friends from Utah came out :)
