David and Willow Go Hiking

Today's entry is authored by David for a change. Today I was having a bummer of a day so I told Teri that I wanted to go hiking up to Cecret lake in Little Cottonwood Canyon. There's something about that short one mile hike that is magical. Usually I hike up there at least once a summer; often during the peak of the wildflower blooms. She wasn't feeling much up to taking a hike so Willow and I went on our own. We had such a great time just talking about the mountains, trees, flowers, mushrooms, rocks, streams, birds.... essentially anything that was in our path.

This trip was later in the season than normal so the wildflowers were all but gone, but the natural beauty of Albion Basin still gets me everytime. About half way up our poor Nikon 4200 digital camera bit the dust. During our Oregon trip I accidentally dropped it face down in the sand while it was on and the lens was extended. We've been able to coax it along, but I guess it finally gave up. Fortunately I had my phone with me so I was able to snap a few pictures up at the lake of Willow out on the rocks and of the Thousands of salamanders swimming in the water. I've seen them there before, but never this many.... literally thousands of them. Towards the end of our stay at the lake a group of chipmunks decided to see if we had anything good for them to eat so Willow and I sat on a log very still and they came right up to our toes. We spoke in whispered voices about how beautiful the day was as the chipmunks scurried beneath our feet.

Carla: A.K.A. Carl

Well, it has been my suspicion for some time that Carla was actually Carl. When we came home from our trip to Oregon, he was mean, much bigger and had developed a very large comb and wattle. Willow is terrified of him and with good reason. He charges us and pecks and it hurts! So, looks like the chickens will be heading off to a farm to live. It is sort of perfect timing with our trip to Memphis and our planned move in October. I am a little sad to see them go but I guess that is the life of a chicken. I am going to wait until Josh and Mara come home this weekend to ship the chickens off to their new home. We figured the sooner the better before he starts crowing. They are already attracted to the grumpy neighbors yard and I can only imagine what they would think of a crowing rooster at dawn ;)

Mara's Goddess Vanity

I finished Mara's birthday present. I went to D.I. and got a vanity for $15 and painted Mara style :) It has a beauty spell written around the mirror; "Earth, Air, Fire Sea let the Goddess' beauty shine through me"
Here are the finished pictures.

Mara's 12th Birthday at "Spa Nancy and Neil" :)

Mara spent her 12th birthday in Portland. She had such a great time. She had her hair done, makeup at the clinique counter, manicure and pedicure, a new dress, shoes and jewelry and dinner out at The Cheescake Factory. They gave her the royal treatment for sure!!!! Thanks you guys for making her day so special!

Home Makeover: Read Style

Well, a bunch of you have asked to see exactly what we have been up to with the house :) Well, here are the most recent photos. No where near done yet but it is coming along. It is amazing how a little paint can change the look of everything. More to come later as we finish things up. David is going to floor the stairs this week so that will look great! Gotta love IKEA! The trim work will be up this weekend and then the kitchen and den will be finished. We aren't sure what to do about the old den carpet. We were going to stain the concrete flooring but unfortunately the person that laid the carpeting last glued it down. From what I have read it is highly toxic and the chemicals you have to use to remove the glue are even more toxic and don't work all that well. So we will see :)

The "old" den that is now the "school room"

The Kitchen: It says, Eat well, laugh often, love much........

The "old" schoolroom which is now the den. Gotta love my $25 sofa and chair from DI!! What a find. There was not a stain on them!

We went to Lagoon yesterday with Certiport's employee day. Willow, David and I had a great time but we sure missed Aspen Josh and Mara. Willow has become quite the daredevil. If she were just a few inches taller she could have ridden more of the bigger rides. She is over the kiddie stuff ;) I think she and David rode the pirate ship 10 times. Once was enough for me! (Aubrey, I had to laugh when I saw your kids call it Galloon too :))
